eBikes

You can ride an e-bike on roads and trails in the City of Cornwall. E-bikes are classified as bicycles under the Highway Traffic Act. You must be at least 16 years old to operate or ride as a passenger. Everyone must wear an approved bicycle or motorcycle helmet with no age exemptions. Like regular bikes, e-bikes are banned from sidewalks, 400-series highways, and any municipal roads where bicycles are prohibited.

Park restrictions and sidewalks

In Lamoureux Park, you can only ride e-bikes on the southern portion of the path, from the east side of the Cornwall Civic Complex to the west side of the RCAFA Wing 424. If you enter the restricted area, you must dismount and walk your e-bike to the non-restricted area.

Technical requirements

An e-bike must have:

  • Maximum weight of 120 kg

  • Electric motor of no more than 500W and a maximum speed of 32 km/h (20 mph)

  • Steering handlebars, pedals, and no more than three wheels

  • Ability to be powered by pedaling

  • A permanent bilingual label from the manufacturer confirming it meets federal power-assisted bicycle rules
