Equity, Belonging and Culture

The City of Cornwall is committed to building a community where everyone feels respected, included and able to participate fully in civic life. Equity, culture, belonging and Truth and Reconciliation guide how we serve residents, support staff and work with community partners to remove barriers, strengthen relationships and create welcoming spaces for all.

Truth and Reconciliation

The City recognizes the history, culture and ongoing contributions of Indigenous Peoples, including the Mohawks of Akwesasne and First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples who live in and around Cornwall.

Through the City’s Truth and Reconciliation Action Plan, we are working to strengthen relationships, support learning and reflection, address barriers and put reconciliation into practice through municipal services, programs and decision-making.

This work is ongoing and must be rooted in respect, accountability, listening and partnership. The City is committed to continuing this journey in collaboration with Indigenous communities, organizations and residents.

Truth and Reconciliation Action Plan

The City’s Truth and Reconciliation Action Plan outlines the steps we are taking to support learning, relationship-building and meaningful action. Residents are encouraged to learn more about the Action Plan and follow the City’s progress as this important work continues.

Equity, Culture and Belonging

Equity, belonging and reconciliation are ongoing commitments that require listening, learning and action. Through the IDEA Community Coalition, the City of Cornwall works alongside local organizations to support inclusion, diversity, equity and anti-oppression across Cornwall, SDG and Akwesasne.

The coalition brings together more than 41 local agencies that share a commitment to creating safer, more welcoming and more inclusive communities. This work supports human rights, strengthens community relationships and helps ensure that residents can access services, programs and opportunities with dignity and respect.

For the City, this means continuing to build equity and belonging into how we communicate, deliver services, support staff and work with partners. It also means recognizing that Truth and Reconciliation is part of this broader commitment, and that meaningful progress depends on strong relationships with Indigenous communities and community partners.

By participating in the IDEA Community Coalition, the City is helping support a community where inclusion is reflected in everyday decisions, public spaces, programs and services.
