Trees
Trees are an important part of Cornwall's landscape. They clean our air, provide shade, and add beauty to our neighbourhoods, parks and streets. Learn more about the trees in your community and discover how the City of Cornwall manages and cares for its urban forest. You can also explore the Commemorative Tree Planting Program to honour a special occasion with a living tribute, and learn about invasive species such as the Emerald Ash Borer that threaten our trees.
Lamoureux Park Arboretum
Visit the Lamoureux Park Arboretum to learn more about Cornwall's urban forest. The Arboretum features 44 types of tree species found across Cornwall's tree canopy, all in one place. Each species is planted in pairs, and every tree has a tag with its name in English, French, Latin and braille. You can explore with a map of the Arboretum or take a full tour in person, which takes about one hour.
Tree planting and care
We plant many tree species during spring and fall. The planting list includes varieties best suited for urban conditions. You can request a specific tree [link to email] on the municipal right-of-way in front of your home. City staff will make the final choice based on tree form, available space, overhead utilities and soil type.
How you can help
The City relies on residents like you to help care for young trees. Make sure that you:
-
Water the tree deeply once a week during dry weather
-
Use caution with grass trimmers near the tree
-
Do not prune or trim the tree
-

Tree species list
We choose trees that can handle pollution, drought and road salt. These species are also resistant to invasive insects and disease. The biggest challenge for planting is the space available for the tree, both above and below ground. Explore the trees that we plant, organized by height.
