Cycling

Cornwall offers beautiful parks and scenic trails perfect for cycling. You can easily get started with the Bike Rental Program at Marina 200. Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, bicycles are vehicles. You must follow the same traffic laws as motorists. To help you ride safely and legally, here are the key rules for e-bikes and regular bicycles.

Follow these safety tips

As a cyclist, you are more vulnerable than motorists. Equip yourself to be safe and visible in traffic and on the path:

  • Helmet: You must wear a helmet if you are under 18

  • Lights: Your bicycle must have front and rear lights and wheel reflectors

  • Visibility: Wear light-coloured clothing

  • Bell: Your bicycle must have a working bell

For traffic safety, always ride on the right with traffic. Stay 1 metre (3.2 feet) from the curb. Be careful when passing parked cars or road hazards. On one-way streets, follow the flow of traffic.

Keep right and pass on the left. Sound your bell or call out when passing. Look and listen. Check behind and ahead before moving across the path or turning. Do not block the path. Move completely off the path when you stop.

Sidewalks

You cannot ride a bicycle with tires over 60 centimetres (24 inches) on sidewalks. You are also prohibited from riding on the sidewalk if you are over age 12. You can only ride on the sidewalk if your bicycle has wheels of 60 centimetres or less and you are under age 12.
