Garbage Collection

The City of Cornwall's contractors collect garbage, recycling and organics (green bin) at the curb once a week. Make sure that you place your waste at the curb after 7 p.m. the day before your collection, or before 7 a.m. on your collection day. To find your collection day, first check which of the five collection zones your home is in. 

Make sure that you use clear garbage bags for your garbage. You can use reusable garbage containers for loose garbage or garbage in clear bags.

Bag and can rules:

• Weekly limit: Each household can set out four clear bags or two garbage cans per week

• For extra bags: You will need to purchase bag tags

• Bag rules: Must be clear and no larger than 90 litres. Do not use small grocery bags

• Can rules: Must have two handles and not be larger than 121 litres (32 gallons)

• Weight limit: No bag or can can weigh more than 22kg (50lbs)

• Lids: Do not tie the lid to your garbage can

Exemptions:

• Diapers are exempt from the bag limit and can also go in your green organics bin

We cannot collect:

• Large bulky items

• Electronics and hazardous waste

• Wood, tires, appliances, mattresses and construction waste that you should bring to the landfill

• Loose waste not in a bag or container

• Garbage set out in cardboard boxes

Multi-residential units

Residential buildings with more than seven units must set out garbage in carts with capacity between 75 litres and 360 litres. The cart must: 

• Use a watertight lid

• Have two working wheels 

• Have a single metal bar and baffle at the front

Please set out your recycling in a bin, transparent bag or 95-gallon recycling cart with a metal bar.

Businesses

We provide curbside collection services for industrial, commercial and institutional customers. If your business is in the Downtown and Le Village areas, your collection is on Mondays and Fridays between 7 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Businesses outside those areas will have their waste collected on the regular collection day for their area.
