Bringing items to the landfill
When you arrive at the landfill, you must:
-
Tell us where the waste came from. We may ask for proof of residence.
-
Separate the following materials from your regular garbage:
-
Cardboard
-
Scrap metal (including appliances)
-
Clean wood waste
-
Tires
-
Leaf, yard and food waste
-
Cover all open loads. This is a Ministry of Transportation (MTO) regulation to prevent litter from blowing onto the road.
Tipping fees
You must pay a fee to dispose of certain items at the landfill. These tipping fees help cover the cost of waste management for our community. Please pay these fees by cash, debit or credit card at the scale house when you arrive. We don't accept American Express. All fees are non-negotiable.
Setting up an account
If you are bringing a large amount of waste, you may need to set up an account. Please note, if your business is outside of Cornwall, you must make a deposit to your account before using the landfill.
Rates and charges
If you’re a resident of Cornwall and not a contracted service, you qualify for the lower residential rate. A different rate structure applies to waste from industrial, commercial and institutional sources.
To avoid surcharges, you must use clear bags and sort your waste. Loads that contain too much recyclable or divertible material will be subject to a 50% surcharge on the total tipping fee. In order to keep our city clean, any loads that you bring uncovered or untarped will lead to an additional surcharge at the scalehouse.

Compost facility
We manage a compost facility at 2590 Cornwall Centre Rd where you can collect compost. While leaf and yard waste is now collected in the green bin program, the facility still has a large amount of finished compost available. You can pick up this compost for free all year. Please note, this compost is made up strictly from leaf and yard waste collection. You are responsible for loading it into your own vehicle.
fREe Store
You can now drop off and pick up gently used items like furniture, tools, and reusable building materials at the landfill's fREe Store. This is an area for reusable items only.
How to use the fREe Store:
-
When you arrive at the landfill, drive to the weigh scale
-
Tell the operator you are there for the fREe Store
-
They will give you directions to the depot
Please be respectful:
-
Take only what you need
-
Leave only items that are in good, reusable condition
By giving your usable items a second life, you help reduce waste and support others in our community. You can also donate directly to local thrift stores, which often support great local causes.
