How to Vote

To vote in the City of Cornwall, you must meet these requirements on Election Day:

  • You are a resident in the city
  • You are a non-resident owner or tenant of land in the municipality
  • The spouse of a non-resident owner or tenant of land
  • You are a Canadian citizen
  • You are at least 18 years old on Election Day
  • You are not legally prohibited from voting

If you’re a student, you can vote in both your home municipality and the municipality where you attend school. You can view the 2026 Voters’ Guide to learn more about who is eligible to vote, how to vote and how you can support candidates.

Register to vote

Make sure that you register to vote and ensure that your information on the voters' list is up to date. You will need one piece of ID that shows both your name and Ontario home address.

Confirm your school support

Your school support designation determines which school board you can vote for in a school board election and where your school support funding goes. Please visit Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) to check and manage your school support designation. Your support defaults to the English Public school board unless you change it.

It is important that you reflect the correct School Board information. Provincial funding is provided to each school board based on where you choose your support to be identified, meaning that if you are a public English or French school board supporter, you should reflect that. If you are a catholic English or French school board supporter, you should reflect that.

Where to vote

As an eligible elector in the City of Cornwall, by the end of September of an election year, you will receive a Voter’s letter by mail, which will include essential information on where you can vote, if you choose to vote by composite ballot, or New to the City of Cornwall, and information on how to vote by Internet voting. Bring your ID

Remember to bring identification with you when you vote. To avoid any delays, please review the accepted forms of ID in advance so you know what to bring.

You can bring:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Canadian Passport
  • Ontario Driver's Licence
  • Ontario Health Card (photo card)
  • Ontario Photo Card
  • Ontario Motor Vehicle Permit

You can bring:

  • Cancelled personalized cheque
  • Mortgage statement, lease or rental agreement for a property in Ontario
  • Loan agreement or other financial agreement with a financial institution
  • Credit card statement, bank account statement or RRSP, RRIF, RHOSP or T5 statement

You can bring:

  • Income tax assessment notice
  • Child tax benefit statement
  • Statement of employment insurance benefits paid T4E
  • Statement of old age security T4A (OAS)
  • Statement of Canada Pension Plan benefits T4A (P)
  • Canada Pension Plan statement of contributions
  • Ontario Works statement of direct deposit
  • Ontario Disability Support Program statement of direct deposit
  • Workplace Safety and Insurance Board statement of benefits T5007

You can bring:

  • Property tax assessment
  • Utility bill (e.g., hydro, water, gas, telephone, cable TV or public utilities commission)

You can bring:

  • Document issued or certified by an Ontario court
  • Document from an Ontario Band Council
  • Insurance policy or statement

You can bring:

  • Pay stub, T4 statement or pay receipt from an employer
  • Transcript or report card from a post-secondary school
  • Document confirming campus residence (issued by the student residence office)

You can bring:

  • CNIB Card or card from a registered charity serving persons with disabilities
  • Hospital card or record
  • Document confirming residence in a long-term care home (issued by the Administrator)

You can also bring any other document from a federal, provincial or municipal government or its agency.
