Handi-Transit
If an individual is unable to use the conventional public transit system, that individual is eligible to apply, and if accepted, be registered for Handi-Transit service. Small, low floor, totally accessible buses are used to provide the service, which operates the same hours as conventional bus service.
Handi-Transit is a demand-response system with assistance provided from accessible door to accessible door.
Handi-Transit is a door-to-door shared bus service. It serves people who cannot use the conventional bus system.

Eligibility application process
If a person has completed an application for eligibility for specialized transportation services and the person’s eligibility has not been determined within 14 calendar days after the completed application is received by Handi Transit, the person shall be considered to have temporary eligibility for specialized transportation services until a decision on his or her eligibility is made. Cornwall Transit shall, upon the request of the person requesting specialized transportation services, make available to the requester all of his or her specialized transportation services eligibility application and decision information in accessible formats. Cornwall Transit has established an independent appeal process to review decisions respecting eligibility. To view the Handi Transit Eligibility Appeals Form, click here. Cornwall Transit shall make a decision on an appeal with respect to eligibility within 30 calendar days after receiving the complete appeal application, but if a final decision is not made within the 30 days, the applicant shall be granted temporary eligibility until a final decision is made.
Emergency or compassionate grounds Cornwall Transit has developed procedures respecting the provision of temporary specialized transportation services earlier than in the 14 calendar days: - where the services are required because of an emergency or on compassionate grounds; and - where there are no other accessible transportation services to meet the person’s needs.
Visitors Cornwall Transit: - makes specialized transportation services available to visitors; and - consider as eligible, - visitors who provide confirmation that they are eligible for specialized transportation services in the jurisdiction in which they reside, or - visitors who meet the specialized transportation services eligibility requirements of the specialized transportation service provider. Cornwall Transit has developed criteria to determine who falls into the category of visitor for the purposes of this section. Cornwall Transit has policies respecting the collection, use and disclosure of personal information collected for purposes of determining eligibility under this section.
Booking Cornwall Transit shall: - provide same day service to the extent that it is available; and - where same day service is not available, accept booking requests up to three hours before the published end of the service period on the day before the intended day of travel. Cornwall Transit provides accessible means to accept reservations.
Service delays Cornwall Transit, will provide information on the duration of service delays to affected passengers by a method agreed to by the specialized transportation service provider and passenger.
Companions and children Cornwall Transit allows companions to travel with persons with disabilities if space is available and will not result in the denial of service to other persons with disabilities. Cornwall Transit allows dependants to travel with a person with a disability who is the parent or guardian of the dependant if appropriate child restraint securement systems and equipment are, if required, available. |

Bookings must be made 24 hours in advance and can be made up to 14 days in advance. Bookings are first come, first serve. Trip requests may not always be accommodated. Cancellations must be made a minimum of 30 minutes before the scheduled pickup time. Fees apply if you fail to cancel or show up for a booked trip. |

Changes to destinations are not permitted once you are on the bus. Drivers are not permitted to make changes to their scheduled client's trip. Fares may be paid by cash or 10-ride tickets. You can buy 10-ride tickets ahead of time at any outlet. You can also purchase a monthly pass at the Transit office. Attendants or support persons ride for free. Drivers will only wait three minutes past their scheduled pick-up time to maintain their schedule. Passengers must be ready for pick-up 10 minutes before the scheduled time provided. The bus may arrive 10 minutes past the scheduled pick-up time. We may use a taxi service at times. Taxies are booked and cancelled by the Transit office. All passengers must wear seatbelts unless they provide a medical note of exemption. Grocery bags and shopping bags are the passenger's responsibility. They are accepted as long as passengers can carry them. Guide dogs are identified by their vest and ID card. Any other service animal will need a letter from the client's physician indicating the type of service it provides. All animals must be restrained on leash or confined for safety purposes and allergies. |
Mobile Aids |
Ramps on buses can accommodate wheelchairs no larger than 76 cm or 30 inches and no longer than 127 cm or 50 inches. Maximum of one step access to door service for pick-up and drop-off. This is for both passenger and driver's safety. Clients without a wheelchair seatbelt must be able to transfer to a bus seat. Clients with scooters must transfer to a bus seat. All mobility aids must be kept in good condition at all times. Location of pick-up and drop-off must be clear of debris, ice, and snow. It is the client's responsibility to ensure that all ramps and walkways are maintained properly. If necessary, contact the drop-off location before booking. |
