 Ontario Winter Games Legacy Award

This award is established in support of the aims of the Ontario Games Program to assist in the development of amateur athletes in Ontario.  Successful amateur athletes become the volunteers and leaders of our communities.  This award recognizes the successful athletes of today in order to indirectly contribute to the future development of our communities in Cornwall and Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry.

The Ontario Winter Games Legacy Award will consist of a minimum of two bursaries of $1,000 to be awarded annually to a male and a female student who are graduating from high school, are pursuing post-secondary studies, who have an average of at least 70%, and who have demonstrated athletic excellence in the communities of Cornwall and Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry.

Application forms will be distributed by the office of the Chief Administrative Officer of the City of Cornwall to the counseling department at each high school, in May of each year.

Each school will be asked to submit the applications of one male and one female candidate who best meet the selection criteria.

Selection of the winning candidates will be made by a Committee consisting of:

  • The annual awards will be presented at a City of Cornwall Council meeting in late June. Successful candidates will be awarded a $1,000 bursary and commemorative plaque by the Mayor. All nominees will receive letters of recognition from the Mayor. The Chair of the 1993 Ontario Winter Games or a designate;

  • The Warden of the United Counties or a designate;
  • The President of the Cornwall and Area Chamber of Commerce or a designate;
  • The President of the Service Club Council of Cornwall & District or a designate.

The criteria for the award will recognize:

  • leadership;
  • community involvement;
  • need (students who have received in excess of $3,000 in bursaries or scholarships would not be eligible for this award);
  • academic achievement (minimum 70% average).

All candidates will be required to submit:

  • a completed application form;
  • proof of Canadian citizenship;
  • proof of residency in Stormont, Dundas, or Glengarry, for a minimum of (3) years of high school, including the graduating  year;

  • a list of other bursaries and the amount to be received by the candidate;
  • letters of recommendation (2 or 3), indicating their achievements in athletic pursuits and their contributions to their school and community.

In the event that there are surplus annual funds, additional scholarships will be made available.

All funds for the Ontario Winter Games Legacy Fund will be administered by the Municipal auditing firm, under the advisement of the Selection Committee.  Fifty percent (50%) of the award will be given to the successful candidates upon receipt of proof of registration in the Fall semester and again in the Winter semester.
