Summer Playground Program

Tuesday July 2nd – Friday August 16th

Trained Park Leaders provide FREE fun and exciting play opportunities for children between the ages of 5 and 12 years at ten park locations throughout the City. (Please see the park locations below). The day will be filled with active games, sports, music, crafts, fun and laughter each and every day!

The program runs from Tuesday July 2nd – Friday August 16th on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. There will be no supervision at the neighborhood parks over the lunch hour. Parents and guardians are welcome to come with their children to the park for the activities. Children under the age of 5 are welcome but they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. Summer Playground Program Registration - All participants must be registered for the program through the City's online booking system, Aquatic Centre, Benson Centre. Registration begins June 3, 2024. Registration will also take place in person at the park beginning July 2, 2024!

Frequently Asked Questions (VERY IMPORTANT)

Are children supervised during lunch hour?

No. There is no supervision during the lunch hour, children are asked to return home and may return at 1pm to continue the fun!

What happens during inclement weather?

The program will close during periods of moderate to heavy rainfall, severe weather such as thunder and or lightning and when the humidex reaches 40c.  Program participants will be sent home due to any unsafe weather conditions so participants must have access to their homes at all times.  An alert will be sent to parents via email informing them that their children are on their way home.

Are there washrooms available at the program sites?

Some Summer Playground Program locations do not have access to water and/or washroom facilities.

What should my child bring to the park?

Participants are to bring sunscreen, hat, water bottle, running shoes and comfortable clothing.

Volunteer Opportunities 

Looking for a place to volunteer for the summer? Do you enjoy spending your days outside and being with kids? Then the Summer Playground Program is the perfect volunteering opportunity for you!

As a volunteer, you will be required to take part in a training session (max. 2 hours) before commencing your hours on the park. This session will ensure that you will understand your responsibilities as a volunteer. Once your training has been completed, you will be assigned to a park location based on your application form.

You will be responsible for helping to make our playground program, its day-to-day activities and special events for children a success.

This will be done by:

  • Showing up to your park regularly and on time
  • Making sure to follow the programs
  • Being patient with everyone

 Some of your duties will include:

  • Setting up activities and crafts
  • Assisting with supervision of the children on the park
  • Providing positive goals and encouraging achievements
  • Creating a safe and positive environment
