Snow Removal

During a winter storm, the City of Cornwall works quickly to clear streets and sidewalks to keep them safe. If you notice an issue or a snowplow damages your property, you can report it online or call 613-932-5354. Please note that the City is not responsible for damaged or lost mailboxes.

Snow clearing routes

We clear snow and salt two types of roads: primary and secondary routes. Each type is handled by a separate team with its own schedule, so they won't necessarily be cleared at the same time. You can download our Street Snow Clearing Priority Map to view the routes.

We clear sidewalks after snowfall exceeds 10 cm. We prioritize sidewalks on primary roads and near schools, then clear the remaining residential sidewalks. We also clear snow from fire hydrants, working systematically across the city. While you can report a buried hydrant, crews will focus on one area at a time to be efficient.

Your responsibilities

You are responsible for clearing snow from your property, and you must not:

  • Throw snow or ice onto any road or sidewalk

  • Pile snow onto a boulevard that is not part of your property, including a neighbour's boulevard or one across the street

  • Obstruct the view of drivers or pedestrians with snow piles

  • Place snow from your property onto any public right-of-way

  • Cover or block a fire hydrant with snow

  • Block a sidewalk with a vehicle parked in your driveway

We encourage you to shovel around the fire hydrant near your property. In an emergency, firefighters need access right away.
