Recreational Vehicles

You cannot operate an off-road vehicle on any highway, road or street in the City of Cornwall. The only exception is crossing a highway directly from trail to trail where the trail meets the road. The Cornwall Police Service and the City of Cornwall recommend that you trailer your off-road vehicle or snowmobile to trail access points. If you are caught driving an off-road vehicle on a highway, you could be fined under the Highway Traffic Act.

If you cross a highway, the following rules also apply:

  • You must have a valid driver's licence

  • You and any passenger must wear an appropriate helmet

  • Your off-road vehicle must be properly registered and have a licence plate

  • In a 50 km/h zone, you cannot drive faster than 20 km/h.

  • In any zone posted above 50 km/h, you cannot drive faster than 50 km/h.

Your off-road vehicle must be insured under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act and the Off-Road Vehicle Act
