Structure Fire on 13th Street Causes Significant Damage

On the afternoon of January 13, 2026, Cornwall Fire Services responded to a reported structure fire in the 300 block of 13th Street. Upon arrival, crews discovered a single detached car garage fully involved with heavy smoke and flames.

A total of 11 firefighters and three apparatus were dispatched to the scene. Fire crews worked quickly to bring the fire under control and prevent extension to nearby structures. Despite their efforts, the garage sustained significant damage. No injuries were reported.

The Cornwall Fire Services Fire Prevention Division conducted an immediate post-incident investigation. The cause of the fire has been determined to be electrical in nature, originating from a space heater that had been left plugged in and operating unattended.

“Space heaters can be useful in cold weather, but they pose a serious fire risk when left operating without supervision,” said Deputy CAO/Fire Chief Matthew Stephenson. “We strongly encourage all residents to turn off and unplug space heaters when leaving the room or the home. A few simple precautions can significantly reduce the likelihood of tragedies like this.”

Cornwall Fire Services reminds residents to follow safe heating practices, ensure working smoke alarms, and remain vigilant when using electrical appliances.
