Structure Fire at 31 John Street
On January 1, 2026, Cornwall Fire Services responded to a significant structure fire at 31 John Street. The call was received at approximately 5:51 p.m. and involved a four-unit residential building.
Fire crews faced extremely challenging conditions, with temperatures near -20°C and icy surfaces impacting firefighting operations and safety. Despite these obstacles and the advanced state of the fire upon arrival, firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze.
Cornwall Fire Services had 10 firefighters on shift at the time of the call and mobilized an additional 24 firefighters for added resources. The response included two aerial trucks, four pumpers and six additional apparatus to manage the incident effectively.
“This was an extremely challenging incident given the severe weather and icy conditions,” said Matthew Stephenson, Deputy CAO and Chief of Cornwall Fire Services. “Our firefighters demonstrated incredible professionalism and dedication under very difficult circumstances, and I am proud of their efforts to protect lives and property.”
Displaced residents are receiving assistance from the Red Cross. The Ontario Fire Marshal and Cornwall Fire Services investigators, in coordination with Cornwall Police Service, have begun their investigation to determine the origin and cause. John Street will remain closed during this process, and residents and motorists in the area are advised to avoid the scene.
Chief Stephenson added, “This incident is a strong reminder for everyone in our community to ensure that their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are installed and in good working order. These devices save lives by providing early warning in the event of a fire or hazardous situation.”
