New Banners Go Up along Veterans Walk

New banners honouring local veterans are now gracing light polls, transforming a portion of Second Street known as Veteran’s Walk into a public gallery of remembrance.

The new banners prominently feature a photograph of a local veteran in uniform, along with their name and service record. These images were thoughtfully provided by the families of Legion members, underscoring the intimate community connection to service.

“We’ve had a very positive response to it. I was ecstatic when I saw the printed banners; they came out beautifully,” says Mavis Williamson, of RCL Branch 297. “A team has been working on this since June 2024, discussing what we liked and what would be respectful to our fallen soldiers. This is the end product, and we are very pleased.”

This year’s display reinforces a collaboration between the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 297, and the City of Cornwall. The banners, featuring the honoured soldiers, were made by the Legion, and the City of Cornwall oversaw their installation on the utility poles.

“The City of Cornwall is proud to continue our partnership with Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297 through the Commemorative Banner Program”, said Mayor Justin Towndale.  “We have a duty to remember those who served our country and who made the ultimate sacrifice. Lest we forget.”
