New Accessible Bus Bay and Shelter on Nick Kaneb Drive Enhances Cornwall Transit Services
The City of Cornwall is pleased to announce that a new accessible bus bay and shelter on Nick Kaneb Drive just south of Marleau Avenue is now in service.
“We’re excited to be using the new bus bay and shelter on Nick Kaneb Drive,’’ said Jean Marcil, Manager of Transit Services. “This is a great development for our transit services, part of an improvement that will have the #5 McConnell Bus route permanently adjusted to better serve riders, by improving accessibility and service.’’
The route no longer turns onto Lochiel Street from Marleau Avenue. Instead, it continues along Marleau Avenue and turns right onto Nick Kaneb Drive, continuing a short distance to the new bus stop that supports the route alteration and is located across from Bridgewood Public School and Southbridge Cornwall Long Term Care Home.
From Nick Kaneb Drive, the #5 McConnell Bus route will turn right onto Holy Cross Boulevard, then left onto Glengarry Boulevard. As a result of this adjustment, the following stops have been removed from service: Lochiel & Stormont, and Glengarry & Kenyon.
The new bus shelter is equipped with a solar panel to supply heating and light, and aligns with municipal objectives related to climate action, sustainability, and accessibility. These shelters provide safety and comfort, use solar infrastructure to lower emissions, and are intended to promote greater transit use as part of Cornwall’s transit system development plans.
The announcement of the new bus bay and shelter comes as Cornwall Transit, as a partner to the Cornwall Public Library, celebrates another successful year of the summer Read to Ride program. This initiative encourages children ages 5–13 to read books over the summer and rewards them with free bus rides; this year, 453 children registered, and, by the end of August, total ridership had reached 5,000.
"The Read to Ride Program promotes literacy, increases transit ridership, and fosters environmentally conscious habits among youth," added Mr. Marcil.
