Garage Fire on Cumberland Street Produces Heavy Smoke Visible Across the City
Cornwall Fire Services responded to a structure fire in the 1200 block of Cumberland Street at approximately 9:18 a.m. on October 7, 2026.
Ten firefighters operating from all three stations responded in four fire apparatus. Upon arrival, crews were met with a well involved garage fire that generated heavy smoke visible from several areas across the City. Six off duty firefighters were called back to provide emergency coverage for the City while all on duty crews were committed to this incident.
Firefighters initiated an aggressive exterior and interior fire attack that quickly brought the fire under control and successfully limited its spread to nearby structures and property. Through coordinated firefighting operations, crews were able to contain the fire to the garage and prevent further damage. One firefighter sustained a minor injury during firefighting operations and was treated at a local hospital.
No injuries were reported from occupants as a result of the incident and no individuals displaced.
Cornwall Fire Services investigators attended the scene to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Following the investigation, the cause could not be determined. As a result, no charges are expected, and the property has been released back to the owner.
“Today's response highlights the professionalism, training and teamwork demonstrated by our firefighters every day,” said Matthew Stephenson, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer/Fire Chief. “Crews from across the City worked together quickly and effectively under challenging conditions to contain a significant fire and prevent it from spreading.”
Cornwall Fire Services reminds residents to ensure smoke alarms are installed and maintained in accordance with Ontario regulations.
