Firefighter Survival Trailer comes to Cornwall, strengthening safety, readiness and survivability skills

Cornwall Fire Services recently welcomed the Firefighter Survivor Trailer to Fire Station 2 on Second Street, providing local firefighters with specialized, hands-on training focused on safety, readiness and survivability during emergency incidents.

Inside the trailer, firefighters navigated a series of simulated challenges designed to reflect some of the most difficult conditions they may encounter. The controlled, repeatable environment allowed participants to practice situational awareness, teamwork, decision-making and critical survival techniques.

“This training gave our firefighters an opportunity to test and reinforce the skills they rely on when conditions are at their most challenging,” said Deputy Fire Chief Chief Addison Pelkey. “It supported our ongoing commitment to firefighter safety, continuous learning and operational readiness so our crews can continue serving the community safely and effectively.”

The training was led by Cornwall Fire Services Captain John Powers, with instructors guiding participants through each evolution and helping them apply the techniques in realistic scenarios.

“The trailer created realistic challenges in a safe environment, giving firefighters the chance to work through problems, communicate as a team and build confidence in their survival skills,” said Captain John Powers. “Training like this helps turn essential techniques into instinctive actions when every second matters.”

The initiative was delivered through collaboration between Cornwall Fire Services, the Cornwall Professional Firefighters Association and the Ontario Professional Fire Fighters Association. It also highlighted the professionalism, physical demands and sustained commitment required of firefighters as they prepare to protect the community.
