Cornwall Fire Services Responds to Structure Fire Fifth St West
Cornwall Fire Services responded to a residential structure fire on Fifth Street West on Thursday evening at 6:00pm.
At the time of the call, 10 on duty firefighters responded immediately from three stations and initiated an aggressive interior attack. Crews were able to bring the fire under control quickly, limiting further damage to the structure.
To support ongoing operations and ensure continued emergency coverage across the city, an additional four off duty firefighters were called in.
One occupant was displaced as a result of the fire; however, there were no reported injuries.
This incident underscores the critical importance of working smoke alarms. In this case, functioning smoke alarms, installed by Cornwall Firefighters just one week prior as part of the Spring Clean Up Initiative Pilot, played a key role in early detection and safe evacuation, preventing injuries.
The Spring Clean-Up Pilot Program is a proactive, collaborative initiative involving Cornwall Fire Services, Cornwall Police Service, By-Law Services, and Environmental Services. Through this program, teams visited over 500 households to promote fire safety, property standards, ensure compliance with by-laws, and bring awareness to several policing initiatives.
“The quick actions of our firefighters, combined with the presence of working smoke alarms, made a significant difference in the outcome of this incident,” said Leighton Woods, Deputy Chief. “This situation could have been much worse. We are encouraged to see the direct impact of our collaborative efforts in the community and the work of our Fire Prevention team.”
A fire investigator was assigned and has determined the cause of the fire to be accidental.
