City of Cornwall Champions Regional Priorities at 2025 AMO Conference

The City of Cornwall is advancing key regional priorities at the 2025 annual Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) Conference in Ottawa, where municipal leaders, provincial officials, and key interest holders are convening to address Ontario’s most pressing challenges and opportunities.

City officials have secured meetings with several provincial ministries and organizations to advocate for enhanced funding, improved public infrastructure, and regional prosperity.

The City’s delegation is engaging with Parliamentary Assistant Ric Bresee from the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to discuss increased funding support for public transportation that would benefit Cornwall and the greater region. The City is also supporting the Township of North Stormont’s delegation with MTO, emphasizing the critical importance of road safety enhancements on Highway 138—a lifeline for residents, commuters, and regional commerce alike.

Additionally, representatives are meeting with the Ontario Medical Association to address the urgent need for primary care providers and to highlight the work of the Mayor’s Task Force on Medical Recruitment.

Recognizing Cornwall’s vital role as a host for sporting events in Eastern Ontario, City leadership is also meeting with Minister Neil Lumsden from the Ministry of Sport to call for increased application-based funding for sports initiatives and infrastructure, strengthening Cornwall’s capacity to support community wellness and economic activity.

Further amplifying Cornwall’s voice on the provincial stage, Mayor Justin Towndale is participating as part of the Border Mayors Alliance in a key delegation with the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, advocating for cross-border economic growth and diplomacy.

“The annual AMO Conference provides an opportunity for us to connect with our peers and learn best practices. But, perhaps most importantly, it also gives us the opportunity to meet Provincial Ministers and their Parliamentary Assistants to advocate for issues and secure vital funding grants," said Mayor Justin Towndale. "The Council of the City of Cornwall will continue to advocate for the needs of its residents.”

Katherine Wells, Director of Communications, Government Relations and Strategic Planning, added, “The AMO Conference provides a platform for Cornwall to engage directly with decision-makers. By working together with the Province, we are able to advance solutions that address local priorities and drive lasting, positive change.”

The City of Cornwall remains committed to championing the issues that matter most to residents by engaging provincial partners and advocating for a thriving, resilient community.
