City of Cornwall and union reach tentative agreement, averting strike

CORNWALL, ON - March 13, 2024 - The City of Cornwall welcomes a tentative agreement with Local 234 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). The local represents Cornwall’s 113 municipal works employees.

The City and CUPE 234 successfully concluded negotiations by agreeing to terms of a three-year collective agreement. The last collective agreement with CUPE 234 expired March 31, 2021. The terms of the tentative agreement will remain confidential, pending ratification and acceptance by both sides.

Cornwall city council will consider the agreement at its special meeting of March 19, 2024.

The deal removes the threat of job action and ensures residents and ratepayers will continue to benefit from the services provided by hardworking municipal employees.

Quotes:

“I’m pleased that we were able to reach this agreement, and work together with CUPE Local 234 to establish a fair contract for our dedicated employees who keep our city running. As we move to our next round of collective bargaining, I look forward to an improved relationship and respect for our employees as we look to bargain forwards instead of backwards.”

- Mayor Justin Towndale

“Council provided senior management with clear guidelines and directions to respect ratepayers and fairly compensate our employees - this deal achieves both of those objectives. We look forward to it being successfully ratified within the coming days, and moving forward in service of Cornwall residents.”

- Mathieu Fleury, Chief Administrative Officer

“I want to thank the bargaining teams from both sides for achieving a good and fair deal. Negotiations aren’t always easy, but this deal sets up a new, more cooperative chapter of relations with this group of employees. We’re stronger for the process we’ve just undertaken and we are all committed to providing great services to residents.”

- Matthew Stephenson, Fire Services Chief and Interim General Manager, Corporate Services
