This program returns July 2!

The City of Cornwall's Recreation Department offers free morning and afternoon drop-in recreation and leisure programs in City parks in July and August.

Trained park leaders provide fun and exciting play opportunities for children between the ages of 5 and 12. Active and quiet games, sports, songs, and crafts are offered daily. There are also a number of special off-the-park events planned throughout the summer, such as soccer tournaments, penny arcades, scavenger hunts and movie days.

The program operates for seven weeks during the month of July and August on Mondays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and Tuesdays to Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Registration for the Summer Playground Program is available at any park site listed below.

Parents and guardians are welcome to come with their children to the Park for the activities. Children under the age of 5 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. There are exciting activities scheduled each and every day, so visit often and don't miss out on an exciting summer!

Please Note:  Participants of the program must be able to access their homes at all times during the program hours. Program sites do not all have access to water or washroom facilities. The program will close during periods of moderate to heavy rainfall, severe weather such as thunder and or lightning and when the humidex reaches 40oC. This decision only affects the Summer Playground Program.

Participants are to bring sunscreen, hat, water bottle, running shoes, healthy snacks and comfortable clothing (for sports).

 Travelling Workshops
Throughout the summer, special guests take time to visit the children at each one of our participating neighbourhood parks. Check with your park leader for full details on dates and time.
 Ontario Early Years Centre
Young toddlers (ages 1-4) can enjoy their own experience with the Summer Playground Program at Riverdale Park. Includes storytelling, crafts, and fun games!
 Sports Workshops
It's time for a new hero to rise in the City of Cornwall! Participants will have to go through a superhero training obstacle course to see what it takes to become a hero. Once they've completed the course, they will be rewarded with a superhero certificate, showing their heroic achievement!
 Arts Workshops
Each park will create an animal pyramid out of recycled boxes (Kleenex, cereal, or cardboard shipping boxes). Each participant will create an animal of their choice from around the world and combine them all together to create a unified animal kingdom!
 Volunteer Opportunities

Looking for a place to volunteer for the summer? Do you enjoy spending your days outside and being with kids? Then the Summer Playground Program is the perfect volunteering opportunity for you!

As a volunteer, you will be required to take part in an afternoon of training before commencing your hours on the park. This afternoon will ensure that you will understand your responsibilities as a volunteer. Once your training has been completed, you will be assigned to a park location nearest to you where you will be able to create a schedule with the Park Leader.

You will be responsible for helping to make our playground program, its day-to-day activities and special events for children a success.

This will be done by:

  • Showing up to your park regularly and on time
  • Making sure to follow the programs
  • Being patient with everyone

Some of your duties will include:

  • Setting up activities and crafts
  • Assisting with supervision of the children on the park
  • Assisting at off-park events
  • Providing positive goals and encouraging achievements
  • Creating a safe and positive environment
