A program to display original local art in City facilities
Cornwall is home to a vibrant arts and culture sector. Art of the City is designed to showcase the strength of our visual artists by providing space in City Hall and other City facilities to display pieces of original art by local artists.
Participating artists benefit from the exposure gained by having their work displayed in public spaces while the City benefits from having its venues enhanced with beautiful displays of art.
Artists from Cornwall and Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry can apply to participate in the program on a voluntary basis. Given the anticipated response and limited display locations, there may be a waiting period for artists whose pieces are accepted for display.
Residents are welcome to stop by City Hall (360 Pitt Street) and view the beautiful pieces of art first-hand! City Hall is open to the public Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
2019 Program
The following groups will be displaying art this year:
- February and March: 125 Pitt Street Studio
- April and May: artists at large
- July and August: artists at large
- September and October: Focus Art
- November and December: Cailuan Gallery
Please keep the following points in mind:
- The artwork on display is considered to be on loan to the City of Cornwall and participating artists must sign a waiver of responsibility absolving the City of responsibility for any theft or damage that might occur.
- Not all submissions will be selected for display. Pieces of work will be selected based on a variety of factors including availability of space, timing and size of the artwork.
- Submissions must be received from the artist directly. A call to artists is made on a regular basis.
- Works of art to be displayed include (but are not limited to) drawings, paintings, prints, digital graphics and photography.
- Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis. Depending on the interest in the program and the limited space available, there may be a waiting period before pieces of artwork can be displayed. It is anticipated that pieces of artwork will be rotated every few months (subject to the number of applications).
- Contributing artists must accept the City's selection of the display venue and the hanging of artwork by maintenance staff.
- Pieces of art submitted for display must be framed or otherwise ready for hanging.
- Artists would be participating on a voluntary basis and the City will not be directly involved in the sale of any artwork on display. However, interested buyers will be free to contact participating artists directly to facilitate a purchase or make other arrangements once the display period ends.
- Following the display period, the pieces of art will be returned to the artists and will be available for sale or any other disposition as the artist sees fit.
