 Household Hazardous Waste Depot 

The City of Cornwall offers its residents 32 depot days for Household Hazardous Waste. Between the months of April until November these depot days, located at 2590 Cornwall Centre Road offer residents a FREE way to dispose of household hazardous waste properly. The Hazardous Waste is either recycled or disposed of properly. Last year 80 tonnes of hazardous waste was recycled by the City. 

The City cannot accept hazardous waste from commercial sources. This program is intended for residential material only. 

When the depot is open at 2590 Cornwall Centre road, residents do not need to report to the scalehouse, they simply need to follow the signage to the proper building to drop off their materials for free. 

Household hazardous waste is not collected curbside it must be taken to the depot located at 2590 Cornwall Centre road on the dates specified in the Waste Collection Calendar.

The Hazardous Waste Depot is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Wednesdays and Saturdays listed below.

No hazardous waste will be accepted from any person outside of these dates or hours. 

Accepted materials

  • Paint: Latex & oil-based 
  • Corrosive: Vehicle batteries, drain cleaners 
  • Flammable: Lighter fluid, turpentine, gasoline, used oil 
  • Toxic: Poisons, bleach, pesticides, paints, cleaning fluids, antifreeze, full or partially full aerosol cans 
  • E-waste (Electronic Waste): Computers, keyboards, monitors, televisions (no wooden console). 
  • Light bulbs: Fluorescent tubes, CFL ("curly" type), incandescent light bulbs, halogen bulbs, ballasts (non-pcb), etc.
  • Other items: Oil filters, empty oil containers, reusable and single-use batteries (please keep separate), smoke detectors

Size and Weight: 

All materials that are received at the depot need to meet the following size and weight requirements: 

  • No containers larger then 55 gallon drums
  • In a properly sealed container, with no leaks, cracks, or contains a substance that could compromise the container
  • Weighs less then 22 kgs (50lbs)

Restrictions

Hazardous Waste that is brought to the Household Hazardous Waste Depot will not be collected if:

  • The container is unlabelled
  • The container or waste type is unknown 
  • The substance is inside a compromised container 
  • The container or substance is radioactive 
  • The container or substance is a biohazard
  • The container or substance is prohibited substance by provincial law (illegal drugs and substances)
  • The container or substance is nuclear waste

Paint Reuse Centre

The Paint Reuse Centre, located at the Household Hazardous Waste Depot at 2590 Cornwall Centre Road is open during Household Hazardous Waste Depot Days.

Residents can go through left over paint, stain, sealant, and coatings and take some home to use if they wish. The City of Cornwall does not guarantee the quality of the products and offers them for free to residents. 

 Tire Recycling

The City of Cornwall currently offers its residents a FREE tire recycling program at the Cornwall Landfill located at 2590 Cornwall Centre Road. The Tire recycling depot at the landfill is open the same hours as the landfill.

Tires accepted in the program consist of the following: 

  • Passenger Light Truck (PL/T) Tires 
  • Medium Truck Tires
  • Off Road Tires < or = 1PTE
  • Off Road Tires >1 PTE
  • Tires that are on or off metal rims

The City of Cornwall recycled 50 tonnes of tires last year which went to construct rubber mats that are used in children's playgrounds around Ontario. 

Wood Waste Recycling

The City of Cornwall currently offers its residents a wood waste recycling program, where residents can delivered untreated and unpainted wood for $62.00 per tonne to the City of Cornwall Landfill located at 2590 Cornwall Centre Road. 

All of the wood collected is ground by a contractor into woodchips and used in large landscaping projects throughout Eastern Ontario. Last year the City of Cornwall recycled 714.64 tonnes of wood waste into woodchips, diverting the wood away from the landfill. 

Residents are also encouraged to pickup clean wood for home and garden projects. Residents can collect clean wood during regular operating hours. In 2022, residents collected repurposed a total of 59.03 tonnes of clean wood!

 

 Electronics Recycling

The City of Cornwall currently offers its residents a FREE electronics recycling program at the City of Cornwall landfill located at 2590 Cornwall Centre Road. The electronics recycling depot at the landfill is open the same hours as the landfill and accepts an unlimited amount of residential electronic waste for no charge.
