Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!

“Cooking is the #1 cause of home fires and home fire injuries in Canada,” said Fire Chief Jeff Weber. “This week, spend some time learning about the simple but important actions you can take to keep yourself and your family safe in the kitchen.”

Kitchen fire safety can start with simple steps like these:

  • Stay in the kitchen while cooking. If you have to leave, turn off the stove.
  • Use a timer to remind you that you’re cooking.
  • Don’t cook if you’re sleepy, have taken medicine or drugs, or have consumed alcohol.
  • Keep an oven mitt and pan lid nearby. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan to smother the flame.
  • Have a kid-free zone of 1 metre around the stove and any other areas where hot food is prepared.

“Cooking fires can grow quickly,” said Chief Weber. “I have seen many homes damaged and people injured by fires that could have easily been prevented.”
