2022 Iroquois Sidewalk Construction Sketch

Background

Iroquois Drive, from Marleau Avenue to St Felix Street has been identified as having a missing sidewalk link on the east side of the roadway. The city will be constructing a new 1.5m concrete sidewalk on the east side of Iroquois Drive.

What to Expect During Construction

Excavation for the sidewalks will take place, followed by granulars installed and then forming and pouring of the concrete sidewalk. Residents will receive notice prior to the sidewalk being formed and poured as they will not be able to access their driveways with a vehicle for two to three days while the concrete cures.  The Contractor will then complete surface restoration, this will include driveways, walkways and boulevards.

Road and Driveway Access

Access to driveways may be impacted during the construction period; however, access will be restored as quickly as possible. Pedestrian access to all homes and businesses will be maintained during construction.

Sod Care Notice

A construction project has recently taken place on your street. This results in the need for new sod to be installed on your property. For the first eight (8) weeks (60 days) after the sod is installed, the Contractor will water the sod on the following schedule:

Week 1 – Daily
Week 2 and 3 – Every Second Day
Week 4 to 8 – Weekly

After the 60-day maintenance period is completed by the Contractor and the sod is accepted by the City, maintenance and care of the new sod becomes the sole responsibility of the Owner/Tenant.

For projects where sod is placed after October 31st, the maintenance process will take place the following spring. This will occur 60 days after the start of the
growing season. At this point, the new sod becomes the sole responsibility of the Owner/Tenant.

For the new sod to thrive on your property the following is recommended:

1) Foot Traffic - Avoid stepping on the newly laid sod for the first two (2) weeks after it is installed. Also keep foot traffic light for the first month. The roots of your new sod are being established during this period. The roots can be affected by too much weight being placed on them.

2) Watering – Newly installed sod requires regular watering in addition to the watering provided by the Contractor. It is recommended that you water the sod for five (5) to ten (10) minutes, two (2) to three (3) times a day, for the first two (2) weeks. Enough water should be provided to soak the first two (2) inches of soil. After this point, you can decrease the amount of watering to once a day, ensuring the top quarter inch of the soil is soaked.

After three (3) weeks, watering can generally be reduced to every other day. After roughly a month, you can begin watering the sod once a week, as you would for an established lawn. Watering sod in the morning or evening allows for greater moisture absorption.

3) Mowing – You should not mow your sod for the first two (2) weeks or until it is 3.5 to 4 inches tall. Ensure your mower blades are sharp and avoid cutting it too short. Generally, a maximum of 1/3 of the grass blade height should be removed when mowing. Avoid cutting the grass when it is wet.

4) Weed Removal – 14 days after the sod is installed, weeds should be removed from the sod before mowing to stop them from spreading. It is recommended to remove weeds from the sod each time before mowing. Sod has shallow roots. Regular weed removal is important to stop weeds from spreading throughout the sod.

5) Fertilization – In the spring following the placement of sod, the Contractor will apply another application of fertilizer and an overseeing
application. Following this, fertilization and seeding becomes the sole responsibility of the tenant/owner.

Sidewalk Construction Notice

Please be advised that the City of Cornwall will be constructing a new sidewalk on the East side of Iroquois Drive. Work is expected to begin: Week of August 29th, 2022

Map of Work Area:

Plan of the sidewalk construction

Work Details
Before construction begins, you should expect to see the Contractor bring equipment onsite and prepare work areas; you may also see paint marks on the roadway and flags in the boulevard which indicate the location of any buried infrastructure (gas mains, electrical, sewers, etc.).
The Contractor will excavate for the sidewalk and place the new granular base for the sidewalk.
The forming and pouring of the sidewalk will take place next. Residents will receive notices before this step as vehicle access to driveways will be lost for two to three days while the concrete cures.
Once the concrete has cured, the Contractor will begin restoration of the boulevards. They will also be grading and paving the affected driveways and walkways.

What To Expect During Construction?
When work is taking place near your property it may be dusty and/or noisy. The City will make every effort to minimize these issues. We appreciate your patience.

Working Hours - Standard work hours are from 7:00am to 6:00pm, Monday to Friday. Work after hours and on weekends may be required in an emergency
Road & Sidewalk Access - While the sidewalk and curbs are being formed and poured, you will not be able to park in your driveway. We will let you know ahead of time. Once the concrete hardens (usually after two or three days), you will be able to use your driveway again. Driveway Access - The Contractor will notify you of any access restrictions to your driveway.
Accessibility - Residents with accessibility requirements should contact the project team. The City is happy to make any necessary accommodations during construction.
Traffic Management - Please expect traffic delays during construction. Residents should also expect an increase in traffic on nearby streets.
Parking - Parking in the active work area is not permitted during construction. Parking will be the responsibility of the property owner. Any vehicles parked in an active work area will be towed if the owner is not available.
Garbage & Recycling - Please follow your normal routine. If required, the contractor will move bins to an alternate location and return them. Please label your bins with your civic address.
Restoration - The construction work area will be restored when the work is complete. Lawn seeding and/or laying of sod will take place during the ideal
growing seasons only. Either in the Spring (April to June) or Fall (September to October).
