Background

In 2019, the first phase of the Sydney Street Reconstruction project was completed from Second Street to Fourth Street. In 2020, the second phase of the Sydney Street Reconstruction project is proposed from Fourth Street to Fifth Street. The reconstruction of Sydney Street will continue north two blocks at a time in subsequent years. The Sydney Street Reconstruction project from Fourth Street to Fifth Street will be coordinated with the reconstruction of Fifth Street from Amelia Street to Sydney Street. Both capital projects proposed for 2020 will be issued in the same tender and completed by the same Contractor.

What to Expect During Construction

The reconstruction of Sydney Street from Fourth Street to Fifth Street includes the complete rehabilitation of 185m of roadway as well as improvements to buried infrastructure. Work includes the removal of a portion of the existing combined sewer system and the installation of new storm and sanitary sewers in order to fully separate the system. Work also includes the removal and replacement of the watermain and the construction new curbs, asphalt pavement and sidewalks on both sides of the roadway.

Temporary Water Service

Water services will be affected during the construction period. The Contractor will be installing a temporary watermain to service properties; short-duration service interruptions will occur when the temporary water system is installed. You will receive notices of the interruptions a minimum of 24hrs in advance, unless the disruption is a result of unforeseen circumstances, i.e. a watermain break. Notices will also be posted to the 'Construction Notices' section of the webpage.  Residents who subscribe to the page will receive notifications of notices and project updates via email. Please click the green 'Subscribe to this page' button below to subscribe to the page and receive project updates.

The installation of the temporary water supply may result in water service issues such as reduced pressure and increased water temperature. Our apologies for the inconvenience. If your water is warm, run taps until the water is cold. If the issue doesn’t improve, contact the City or Contractor via the contact information provided below.

Utilities

Throughout the duration of construction, you will also see various utility companies (Enbridge, Cornwall Electric, Bell, Cogeco etc.) working within the project area as well. If you encounter any utility related issues throughout construction please contact your utility company directly.

Driveway Access

Access to driveways will be impacted during the construction period; however, access will be restored as quickly as possible. Pedestrian access to all homes and businesses will be maintained during construction. Where the temporary water supply system crosses driveways, the Contractor will install a temporary gravel ramp over the piping for access purposes.
