What does a Cornwall Firefighter do?

Our Firefighters are responsible for performing a multitude of emergency incident operations such as fire extinguishment, search and rescue, ice and water rescue and salvage and overhaul. All of these functions are performed so that lives are protected and property and environmental impact is minimized. These activities are conducted under the direct supervision of Cornwall Fire Services company officers in accordance with established policies, guidelines and procedures. Firefighters also perform less glamorous tasks that help keep us ready to respond. Some of these tasks include equipment and apparatus maintenance and station duties.

What do I need to apply?

At this time, we are not accepting applications as we are activating Firefighters from our current Eligibility list for upcoming vacancies.

Roughly every two years, the City of Cornwall conducts an eligibilty list recruitment to prepare our next Firefighters. Once that process begins, to be eligible you will need:

  • Current resume
  • Proof of formal education (certificate/diploma/degree/transcript)
  • Current Basic First Aid with CPR & AED certificate
  • Current Driver’s Abstract with less than six (6) demerit points accumulated (within 1 month of submission date)
  • Pleasure Craft Operators Card
  • Ontario Class D driver’s license with Z endorsement (or equivalent). This must be completed prior to the application process.

All qualifications must be completed and valid before the closing deadline for submissions.

What does the recruitment process look like?

We are no longer accepting applications for this round of recruitment. Please review our 2020 Recruitment Booklet for an overview of the recruitment process. The City of Cornwall typically recruits every two years.
