Aquatic Instructor/Lifeguards

The recreation department is current seeking part time aquatic lifeguards for the Aquatic Centre. The Aquatic Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of patrons using aquatic facilities. The Aquatics Lifeguard monitors the conduct of patrons, prevents accidents and responds to emergencies by administering the policies, procedures, rules of certifying bodies. 

Primary Duties:

  • Ensure that the provisions of the Health Protection and Promotion Act Ont. Reg. 565 Public Pools are adhered to.
  • Lifeguard and assume responsibility for bathers in the pool and change room areas.
  • Ensure that all rules and regulations are enforced in a courteous and positive manner.  To promote a professional public image and deal with problems / complaints as they arise. Provides information and advises Head Guard accordingly.
  • Ensure that all patrons leave the pool area before the next swim / class.  Nobody should be left unattended on the pool deck.
  • Ensure that all equipment is stored neatly when swims are finished.
  • Be prepared to perform water rescues, first aid, current resuscitation methods and other emergency procedures when required.
  • To attend and actively participate in all in-service training sessions and staff development programs.
  • To maintain necessary current Aquatic Certifications and provide Supervisor, Aquatic Complex & Programming with such documents. 
  • Attend workshops and seminars to upgrade technical knowledge. Recertify qualifications and awards when necessary.
  • Report ALL accidents / incidents; accident / incident forms to be completed and submitted to the Head Guard.

All above duties applies to Instructors as well as the following:

  • Instruct adults and children in all phases of water safety. Teach and evaluate Learn to Swim and Advanced levels.
  • Ensure that the equipment you require is at hand before the class begins, and replaced after the class is finished neatly and efficiently.
  • To participate in theme day activities set up for the Learn to Swim programs.
  • Lesson plans to be submitted to the Head Guard after each class.
  • Ensure that worksheets are properly maintained and presented to the Head Guard at the completion of each session.
  • Maintain ongoing records of attendance and present halfway and final progress cards with appropriate comments to the candidates at the end of each session. Final progress cards to be submitted 1 week prior to final class for Supervisor, Aquatic Complex & Programming’s signature.

  • Ensure that the Learn to Swim levels are progressively evaluated and crests are awarded to the candidate at the time of completion.
  • Ensure candidates in the Lifesaving Society programs are prepared for examination. Responsible to sign & submit test sheets to Supervisor, Aquatic Complex & Programming.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Aquatic Complex & Programming or Manager of Recreation & Facilities.

Qualifications: (documentation to be provided at time of application unless indicated not required)

  • Current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification.
  • Current Lifesaving Instructor Certification.
  • Current National Lifeguard Certification.
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR / AED level C. (must be from St. John Ambulance, Red Cross, Lifesaving Society or Canadian Ski Patrol)
