All students must be full time day students at a recognized secondary or post-secondary institution and be returning to full time attendance in fall of 2019.

Students must meet the basic requirements of the position. Should you be offered the position, with the City of Cornwall, you will be required to submit verification of school status.

Your resume must clearly demonstrate how you meet the requirements if the position, and have documentation to substantiate how you meet the requirements.   Those not accepted as a summer student will be considered for temporary positions at the Cornwall Aquatic Centre.  We thank all those who apply, however, only those selected for further consideration will be contacted.


  • Ensure that the provisions of the Health Protection and Promotion Act Ont. Reg. 565 Public Pools is adhered to;
  • Lifeguard and assume responsibility for bathers in the pool and change room areas;
  • Instruct adults and children in all phases of water safety. Teach and evaluate, Red Cross/Lifesaving programs;
  • Ensure all rules and regulations are carried out in a courteous and firm manner;
  • Be prepared to perform water rescues, first aid, current resuscitation methods and other emergency procedures when required;
  • To actively participate in daily in-service training sessions and staff development programs;
  • Teach, conduct and participate in specialized programs when requested, ie. (synchro, speed swimming and diving competitions)
  • Perform general maintenance duties when necessary, ie. Cleaning washrooms, equipment room, pool office. Responsible to check equipment on a daily basis;
  • To maintain necessary current aquatic certifications and provide Aquatic Coordinator such documents;
  • Attend clinics to upgrade technical knowledge and recertify qualifications when required;
  • Must wear City issue uniform;
  • Maintain ongoing record of attendance and present progress cards to the candidate at the completion of sessions;
  • Ensure all Red Cross worksheets are properly maintained;
  • Ensure that the Learn To Swim levels are progressively evaluated and crests awarded;
  • Must be an active participant in the annual lifeguard competition, this is mandatory;
  • To be a representative of the City of Cornwall and maintain outstanding public relations skills and professional image at all times;
  • All other duties as assigned.


 Qualifications: (documentation to be provided at time of application)

  • Current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification;
  • Current Lifesaving Instructor Certification;
  • Current National Lifeguard Certification;
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR/AED Level C ( must be from St. John Ambulance, Red Cross, Lifesaving Society or Canadian Ski Patrol);
  • Must obtain and maintain a satisfactory CPIC (Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Check), at the candidates own expense
