We have some important updates regarding the Cornwall Transit Express Route 71 schedule: Tuesday, January 6, 2026: Express Route 71 will operate on an hourly schedule instead of the usual half-hourly service. Wednesday, January 7 to Friday, January 9, 2026: Express Route 71 will not be running during these dates. Cornwall Fire Services, in coordination with the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM), has concluded its investigation into the structure fire at 31 John Street on January 1, 2026. The OFM has determined that the cause of the fire is undetermined.
Tragically, one fatality was confirmed as a result of the incident. The name of the deceased will not be released until next of kin have been notified.

On January 1, 2026, Cornwall Fire Services responded to a significant structure fire at 31 John Street. The call was received at approximately 5:51 p.m. and involved a four-unit residential building.
Fire crews faced extremely challenging conditions, with temperatures near -20°C and icy surfaces impacting firefighting operations and safety. Despite these obstacles and the advanced state of the fire upon arrival, firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze.

River Institute Provides Update
On December 8, Council listened to the River Institute Annual Update, presented by executive director Dr. Jeff Ridal, and program lead/research scientist Matt Windle. Ridal noted that one of the most exciting occurrences for the year was the expansion of the facility itself, an environmental DNA laboratory that supports a core theme of the research done in Cornwall.
