The Future is in Your Hands

Imagine using your hands to improve the soil of local farmers.

The same hands that prepare healthy foods at home can place food waste into containers and take these containers to the curb. Once collected, your food waste can be processed into food waste fertilizer. The food waste fertilizer can then rebuild soil health.

The future is in your hands!

“Regenerative agriculture reverses climate change by rebuilding soil organic matter and restoring degraded soil biodiversity. This results in both carbon drawdown and improvements in the water cycle,” said Carl Goodwin, Environment Division Manager.

The City of Cornwall must divert 50% of its organics from the landfill by 2025. The City of Cornwall is preparing for the deadline – and planning for efficient use of the landfill – by engaging with consultants and the community.

“Our consultants are examining every possibility, and the work has already begun,” said Dave Kuhn, Acting Waste Management Supervisor. “We audited dozens of households this fall to see what they’re throwing away, and what diversion programs they’re participating in.”

The next steps are to identify and evaluate collection and processing options that would be a good fit for the City of Cornwall.

Here is what Cornwall residents can be doing now:

  1. Sign up for updates about the Municipal Organics Feasibility Study by emailing organics@cornwall.ca
  2. Consider these questions as we prepare to engage with you and your neighbours:
    1. How are you managing your organics?
    2. What do you think about separating them out so they can be collected and used as a resource?
    3. Do you predict any issues for you and your family?
    4. How we can support households in making changes that might be necessary to make sure we are managing organics in the best way for now and for future generations?
