Update on Welcoming Evacuees from Sandy Lake First Nation

Posted On Tuesday June 10, 2025

The City of Cornwall is dedicated to providing critical support to evacuees from Sandy Lake First Nation. As of last night, a total of 377 evacuees arrived at the Dev Centre. The Canadian Red Cross remains fully deployed on-site, leading the coordination of logistics, daily operations, and registration. The City of Cornwall is working closely with the Red Cross to develop a plan for childcare assistance and activities for the children, including toys.

The Eastern Ontario Health Unit and Cornwall SDG Paramedics continue to work on-site to ensure evacuees have their medical needs met and receive their necessary medications. Medical support includes health assessments, medication management, and addressing any immediate health concerns. Paramedics are available to provide emergency medical care and support as needed.

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is actively involved, with a Sandy Lake Band Council member working alongside them to ensure culturally informed support and effective communication with evacuees.

Increased security measures, including additional on-site security personnel, have been implemented at the Dev Centre to ensure the safety and well-being of all evacuees.
