Optimist International Day in the City of Cornwall

It’s Optimist International Day in the City of Cornwall.

Cornwall City Council proclaimed Thursday, February 7 as Optimist International Day.

“The Optimist volunteers have always demonstrated a true dedication to their community and most particularly to the future of our kids,” said Mayor Bernadette Clement. “I salute them on this special Optimist International Day but I am grateful to them all year long!”

The Cornwall Optimist Club provides opportunities for youth in our community through softball and floor hockey leagues, Easter egg hunts, the Christmas Toy Drive and breakfast with Santa. Popular Optimist fundraisers include Ribfest and numerous summer BBQs.

This year, the Cornwall Optimist Club took on a new volunteer project: the maintenance of an outdoor rink at Optimist Park.

Club president Terry Muir said the winter-long commitment aligns with their motto, “Friend of youth.”

“We love seeing kids out having fun,” said Muir. “It’s great to watch the kids skate.”

Muir estimated a group of 10 to 15 volunteers have invested about 100 hours into the rink at the corner of Sunnyside Avenue and St. Michel Avenue. The rink is one of eight in Cornwall being maintained by dedicated volunteers.

The Optimist Club maintains a canteen at the site, which is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Volunteers also open the clubhouse for skaters to warm up when it isn’t booked for other events.
