Statement from Mayor Justin Towndale on upcoming SIBC Toll Increase

Posted On Thursday January 30, 2025

The City of Cornwall is disappointed by the recent announcement from the Seaway International Bridge Corporation (SIBC) regarding the toll increase, effective April 1, 2025. The decision to increase tolls places an additional burden on the many residents and businesses who rely on the bridge, which serves as a critical link between Cornwall and Akwesasne.

I echo the concerns expressed by Grand Chief Leonard Lazore and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne regarding the detrimental impact of this toll increase. This increase, combined with the 2024 increase, represents a 40% increase over the past two years for those travelling in passenger vehicles. It will now cost the average person $10.50 for a round trip between our two communities. This will have a serious impact.

The Seaway International Bridge is the connecting link for both Cornwall and Akwesasne, and these increases further serve to isolate Akwesasne, penalizing those travelling between our two communities. This creates more barriers to economic opportunities, daily activities, and essential services. It is crucial that such decisions are made in consultation with all affected communities to avoid further strain.

I urge the Seaway International Bridge Corporation and the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL) to reconsider the toll increase and engage in meaningful dialogue with the communities impacted by this decision. I further urge SIBC and FBCL to relocate the toll booth to the base of the southern crossing so that traffic may travel between Cornwall and Akwesasne without penalty. It is essential that the needs of both Cornwall and Akwesasne, as well as other surrounding areas, are fully considered.

The City of Cornwall remains committed to maintaining strong partnerships with our neighbouring communities, and we will continue to advocate for solutions that ensure accessibility, fairness, and prosperity for all.
