Cornwall Transit Marks 50 Years of Service
This month, Cornwall Transit is proud to celebrate its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of dedicated service to the community. To commemorate this milestone, the public is invited to join City officials and staff for a special event on November 14, from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm at Cornwall Transit (863 Second Street West). Attendees will enjoy light refreshments and will have the opportunity to learn more about transit services and the history of Cornwall Transit. In honour of this milestone, there will be no transit fare on November 14, 2024.
Since the first Cornwall Electric streetcar began service on July 1, 1896, transit in Cornwall has evolved significantly. The City of Cornwall took over transit services on November 11, 1974, establishing Cornwall Transit. Over the years, the community has seen the introduction of specialized transit services in 1981, community bus services in 1992, and the addition of hybrid buses to the fleet.
"I want to offer my congratulations and thanks to all the staff, both past and present, on the 50th Anniversary of Cornwall Transit," said Mayor Justin Towndale. "Day in and day out, Cornwall Transit has been providing an essential service to our residents for half a century. Here's to the next half."
Jean Marcil, Manager of Transit Services, added, “As we celebrate this milestone, we look back with pride at how far we’ve come and look forward to continuing to serve our community with excellence and innovation. This event is a wonderful opportunity to engage with our riders and celebrate our shared history.”
Cornwall Transit’s current fleet consists of fifteen conventional buses and ten specialized transit buses, including three hybrid buses. They transport approximately 940,000 passengers annually through their conventional service and 25,000 passengers through specialized transit service.
“We are incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication of our members over the last fifty years," said Richie Jarvo, spokesperson for the transit workers' union ATU local 946. "Their commitment to providing safe and reliable transportation has been instrumental in Cornwall Transit's success. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the city to serve the community for many more years to come.”
With over two hundred seventy-five bus stops, forty-three bus shelters, and twenty-three bus benches, Cornwall Transit strives to provide accessible and reliable transportation to all residents.
