City of Cornwall to open child care for essential and core service workers

Posted On Tuesday March 31, 2020

The City of Cornwall has received authorization from the Province of Ontario to open a select number of licensed child care centres specifically to provide care for children of essential and critical service workers.

Spaces in these centres are reserved exclusively for children of essential and critical service workers identified in the Province of Ontario's "List of Workers Eligible for Emergency Child Care," who have no other alternative source of child care, including a spouse/partner or family member. There a number workers that are eligible for emergency child care, including, but not limited to police officers, paramedics, firefighters, regulated health care professionals, unregulated health care providers working in health care, and individuals who perform work that is essential to the delivery of core services in a municipality. The safest option for families is to have children remain at home, if possible.

To support members of this critical workforce, emergency child care service will be available at no cost to families, funded by the Province of Ontario, for children under age 12.

Spaces are limited due to health and safety requirements in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Applications will be prioritized and accepted until all spaces are filled. Submitting an application does not guarantee a space will be allocated to the applicant. All applicants will be contacted by Child Care staff.

If the level of demand exceeds the ability to provide care, the City will prioritize child care space for front-line health care workers and first responders.

Child care centre staff will take additional precautions to maintain a healthy and safe environment for children, including daily screening of both children and staff, increased disinfection, reduced group sizes, and the prohibition of visitors.

“We are profoundly grateful for the efforts of health care workers, first responders, and other essential employees in Cornwall and SDG. Access to emergency child care will ensure they can continue to care for the most vulnerable people in our communities,” said Mayor Bernadette Clement.
