Be Holiday Smart – Fire Doesn’t Take the Summer Off

Posted On Tuesday June 11, 2019

Cornwall Fire Services is hosting a fire safety day at Cornwall’s Beer Store locations. Bring the whole family to meet your local fire department and have your fire safety questions asked.

Date: Saturday, June 15
Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Locations

  • 960 Brookdale Ave
  • 838 Sydney St
  • 1396 Second St E

“Fire and smoke move faster than you,” said Chief Pierre Voisine. “There’s no time to figure out how to escape your home AFTER a fire starts. Practice a home fire escape plan BEFORE there’s a fire so you can get out safely.

“Everyone has a responsibility to protect their family and home from fire,” added Voisine.

Summer Fire Safety Tips:

  • Stay in the kitchen or near your barbeque when cooking.
  • Install smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas of your home and cottage.
  • Install carbon monoxide alarms outside all sleeping areas of your home and cottage.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms every month to ensure they are working.
  • Change batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide alarms at least once a year.
  • Develop and practice a home fire escape plan at home and at your cottage.
  • When opening your cottage for the season, bring a new smoke alarm and batteries.
