NEW: Summer leaf and yard waste collection dates

Posted On Friday May 22, 2020

Leaf, branch, and yard waste collection will continue every other week through the summer.

Yard waste collection, which typically takes place only in the spring and fall, will now also take place the weeks of:

  • June 8-12
  • June 22-26
  • July 6-10
  • July 20-24

Leaf and yard waste will not be collected outside of these weeks.

Additional weeks may be added in August and September.

As of September 28, regular fall yard waste collection will continue weekly until November 13.

“We heard residents’ interest in yard waste collection beyond the usual spring and fall dates,” said Mayor Bernadette Clement. “The City of Cornwall is so pleased to be able to offer an improved service this summer.”

Additional leaf, branch and yard waste dates will limit the amount of natural, compostable waste sent unnecessarily to the landfill. Yard waste is collected by separate trucks and delivered to a compost pile at 2590 Cornwall Centre Road. Residents may take the finished, free compost for use on their properties.

“I encourage residents to take advantage of these additional collection dates,” added Mayor Clement. “The results of this summer’s bi-weekly collection will help City staff understand whether this should continue later this summer and beyond 2020.”

How Leaf, Branch, and Yard Waste Collection Works

There is no limit to the number of bags or containers of yard waste residents can set out during yard waste collection weeks.

Leaves should be set out in brown paper bags or labelled reusable containers weighing no more than 60 pounds. Branches should be tied in bundles no more than 3 feet wide or long.

These items cannot be included in leaf and yard waste: animal feces, dirt, soil, sod, flower pots, plastic trays, kitchen organic waste (food scraps), root balls, tree trunks, stumps, large branches, plastic bags, glass, gravel, and stone.
