Cornwall Transit Services
Cornwall Transit is responsible for the provision of an efficient and effective transit service which responds to the needs of the community. Cornwall Transit operates several types of services, including conventional routes, specialized (Handi-Transit) service, industry specials, charters and other specials.
Conventional Fixed Route Service
Conventional fixed routes provide Cornwall with 30 minute bus service Monday to Friday from 6:00 A.M. to 7:15 P.M.and 10:15 A.M.to 6:15 P.M. on Saturdays and 60 minute bus service is available evenings and Saturday mornings. The routes are designed to serve the City's residential areas, retail/business corridors, schools, malls, medical facilities, industries, etc. The routes all terminate at the central transit terminal in downtown Cornwall at the intersection of Pitt Street and Second Street. The Pitt and Second terminal facilitates transfers between all routes and is within walking distance of the downtown business/retail corridor, Cornwall Square Mall, public library, art gallery, community court house, etc.
Handi-Transit is a parallel service for persons with disabilities and operates the same hours as Conventional service. It is a demand, response system with accessible door to accessible door assistance provided. If an individual is unable to use the regular Conventional public transit system, that individual is eligible to apply and, if accepted, will be registered for Handi-Transit service. In order to become eligible, an application form which is available on our website and at the Cornwall Transit office, must be completed by a medical professional. Small, low floor, totally accessible buses are used to provide the service. Handi-Transit 10 ride cards are now available for Adults, Seniors and Students.
Operates between 9:30 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. Monday to Saturday and is primarily designed for the seniors and persons with disabilities, but is open to anyone. It operates on a fixed route and schedule utilizing a small, low floor, totally accessible bus. The route touches on senior complexes, medical centers, shopping malls, Hospitals, library, senior recreation centers, etc. It was designed and implemented to help reduce demand for the operationally expensive Handi-Transit service. Presently the Community Service operates 2 routes: # 61 and accommodates passengers using walkers, wheelchairs and scooters. No reservations are required.
MINOR SCHEDULE ADJUSTMENT - a reduction of one (1) hour of service from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm will take effect June 17, 2013.
Cornwall Transit contracts taxi service at a flat rate to provide transportation for Handi-Transit registrants who are ambulatory. For example, we may move an ambulatory person from a Handi-Transit vehicle to a taxi to make room in the transit vehicle for a person in a wheelchair. Again, taxi service was implemented to help reduce demand for the operationally expensive Handi-Transit service.
Buses are available for charter services within the city at a cost of $70.00 (regular charter), $65.00 (school buses to City facilities) and $80.00 (Sunday charters) per hour plus H.S.T. as of March 7, 2014.
