New Splash Pad Opens In Cornwall

August 27, 2010

Guy Lauzon, Member of Parliament for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry; Jim Brownell, Member of Provincial Parliament for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry; and Bob Kilger, Mayor of the City of Cornwall, are pleased to celebrate the completion of a new splash pad at St. Theresa Park at an official ceremony in Cornwall.

The addition of this splash pad with upgraded, accessible change rooms and washrooms will provide additional opportunities for fun and fitness to residents in this neighbourhood.

The governments of Canada and Ontario have each committed up to $83,250 to the project, while the City of Cornwall will contribute the balance of the project costs totalling $250,000.

“This project will provide families and children in our community with a place to stay active and cool throughout the summer,” said MP Lauzon. "By investing in recreational infrastructure under Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our government is creating jobs to stimulate local economies and improving quality of life.”

“The projects we are celebrating today support our government’s Open Ontario plan to stimulate the economy and create new opportunities for jobs and growth,” said MPP Brownell. “In Cornwall, Open Ontario is supporting local trades and businesses while promoting a stronger, healthier community.”

“The new splash pad is part of the City’s vision to provide the recreational amenities our community needs,” said Mayor Bob Kilger. “This project is another example of the City’s commitment to the quality of life in Cornwall.  This park and its splash pad will create lasting memories for the children of the neighbourhood.”

This project is one of more than 760 across the province that is moving forward thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $380 million under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program in Ontario and the Ontario Recreation Program. The governments of Canada and Ontario teamed up to support Ontario's communities and create jobs by improving recreational infrastructure, as these types of projects also encourage higher levels of participation in physical activity and community building.
