Benson Centre Hosts Allstate Bantam / Midget Hockey Tournament

It will be a special weekend at the Benson Centre as Cornwall’s new sports facility hosts the Cornwall Minor Hockey Association’s Allstate Bantam/Midget Hockey Tournament.

“It’s the 50th anniversary of this tournament and it’s taking place in our new home, the Benson Centre, for the first time,” said Tournament Chairperson Debbie Caskenette.

A total of 62 hockey teams from across Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec will take to the ice during the four-day tournament, with games being played on the three ice surfaces at the Benson Centre as well as the Cornwall Civic Complex. All told, there will be 114 games played during the event.

Over 1,300 players and coaches will participate in the event, which is one of the longest-running hockey tournaments in Eastern Ontario. It’s estimated the hockey tournament generates $250,000 in economic spin-offs for the community.

“The CMHA Bantam/Midget Tournament has a rich history, and I am excited to see a new era begin at the Benson Centre,” said Mayor Bob Kilger. “This tournament will help to showcase all of the great things that Cornwall has to offer.”

In addition to the new venue for this year’s tournament, there will be some new competition on the ice as well with the addition of several Quebec-based teams. Home playoff dates had prevented Quebec-based teams from participating in the tournament in years past, but thanks to some schedule changes, that is no longer an issue.

The action gets underway on Thursday, February 2nd with an official opening ceremony at 6:10 pm with Mayor Kilger, MPP Jim McDonell and MP Guy Lauzon followed by the tourney opener between the Cornwall Bantam Colts and the Cumberland Grads at 6:30 pm (Benson Centre Pad 1). All three Cornwall teams will be in action on opening night, and residents are encouraged to visit the Benson Centre and show their hometown pride.
