Cornwall Community Hospital receives funding to improve patient flow

June 16, 2011

The Cornwall Community Hospital – McConnell Site has received $892,200 in provincial funding to further reduce emergency room wait times.

The funding will be used to implement a number of initiatives including the establishment of the Emergency Department Process Improvement Program (EDPIP), the creation of a director position dedicated to quality and process improvement and investments in strategies to improve patient flow and wait times throughout the hospital.

“The Cornwall Community Hospital is committed to ensuring timely access to the critical care and emergency needs of our community and appreciates the supports and investments made by the Province and the Champlain LHIN targeted at these initiatives,” said Cornwall Community Hospital CEO Jeanette Despatie.

As of March 2011, 82 per cent of emergency room patients at the Cornwall Community Hospital – McConnell Site were treated within the provincial targets for wait times. Those targets are four hours for patients with minor/uncomplicated conditions and eight hours for patients with complex or serious conditions.

“The Cornwall Community Hospital – McConnell Site has clearly shown itself to be a leader in taking innovative steps to provide timely, high quality emergency care for its patients,” said Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry MPP Jim Brownell. “These efforts not only improve access to high quality health care, but they are also helping to improve the patient experience.”

The provincial government is providing $100 million to help 74 Ontario hospitals put in place initiatives that reduce bottlenecks in the emergency room, such as patient flow tracking systems and the hiring of nurse practitioners to treat patients with less complex conditions.
