Winterfest2013

The Storm Realty Cornwall Winterfest Carnaval is returning for 2013 with two additional days of free family-oriented activities for residents to enjoy.

Cornwall’s signature winter festival kicks off on Thursday, February 14th and runs through the Family Day holiday weekend, wrapping up on Monday, February 18th. This year’s event will be highlighted by three evening fireworks displays by David Whysall’s Team Canada International Fireworks team in Lamoureux Park on February 15th, 16th and 17th.

“This will be a first for the City of Cornwall and it’s a reflection of the positive growth the festival has experienced,” said Winterfest Chair Jason Mitchell.

According to organizers, the attendance at last year’s Winterfest surpassed 20,000, and they’re hoping to build on that success by expanding the event from three days to five. In addition to the fireworks, some of the other free activities on tap include live entertainment, outdoor skating, an inflatable midway, a dance party and wagon rides, with the majority of the events taking place in Lamoureux Park.

A full list of activities will be available on the Winterfest website shortly.

Winterfest will officially get underway with a Ceremonial Puck Drop at the Cornwall Colts game on Thursday, February 14th (7:30 pm) at the Cornwall Civic Complex. The opening ceremonies will take place from 4 pm to 8 pm in Lamoureux Park on Friday, February 15th, followed the three days of free activities throughout the City.

The success of the festival depends largely on the support of community sponsors, and organizers have secured 70 partners and sponsors for the 2013 edition of the festival. Storm Realty Cornwall is the title sponsor for the third consecutive year. Other major sponsors include the City of Cornwall, Children’s Aid Society, Supply Chain Management, Bell Canada and the Kinette Club of Cornwall. Media Partners include the Seaway News, Cornwall Express, Corus Entertainment, TVCogeco, Standard-Freeholder and the Local Seeker.

The event is led by a volunteer Board of Directors that spend countless hours planning the various details and event activities.

“We also have over 100 volunteers who take part in Winterfest yearly, and thousands of hours go towards the creation of the Festival,” said Mr. Mitchell.

Winterfest currently has a contest underway that allows residents to support the festival while also having a chance to win tickets to eight premier events – Justin Bieber, Rhianna, Bon Jovi, Billy Talent, Kinsmen Lift-Off 2013 (weekend pass), Stars on Ice, Disney on Ice and the Harlem Globetrotters.

Tickets are available at the CNIB Lottery Booth in the Cornwall Square, Short-Line Convenience and Video (1300 Second Street West), MacMillan's Convenience (35 Marlborough Street), Storm Realty Cornwall (408 Pitt Street), Partir D'un Bon Pas (610 McConnell Avenue) and Le Centre Culturel de Cornwall (124 Anthony Street).  Tickets are 1 for $2 or 3 for $5 and the prize will be drawn at 6 pm on Sunday, February 17th at the Bandshell in Lamoureux Park.
