Fun-filled weekend in store at Cornwall Waterfest

Cornwall Waterfest

Cornwall Waterfest will take place on Saturday, August 17th and Sunday, August 18th with a jam-packed schedule featuring dragon boat races, a strongman competition, an art exhibit, live music and much more.

“There is something for everyone,” said event chair Johanna Murray.

Waterfest will be held near the soccer fields at Second Street West and Power Dam Drive. Bring your blankets, chairs and anything else you need, and spend some time by the beautiful river. To assist spectators in getting to the site, Cornwall Transit will be modifying its Riverdale route all day Saturday to add stops in the area of Haulage Road.

“We want to help people access this great community festival,” said Transit Division Manager Len Tapp.

The weekend starts off at 9 am on Saturday with dragon boat races and strongman competitions, followed by the 7k Water Run, the Walk for Heart, and the Dragon Egg drop on Sunday.

The Artfest market makes a return this year to the festival with 40 local artists and artisans exhibiting their hand-made creations.

“There’s a little bit of everything again this year,” said Kate Dwyer, Artfest coordinator, “Painters, recyclers, jewelers, stained glass, vinyl work, driftwood art - a good broad selection. I think we’re going to have a great turnout.”

Throughout the weekend, there will be a number of demonstrations including kayaking, hula hoop demos, dance, Tai Chi, drumming, and a cooking demo from the Dairy Farmers. There will also be food vendors on site.

New this year, the Waterfest Stage will feature a great line-up of local musical entertainment.

On Saturday, from 11 am to 1 pm, there will be a youth open mic showcase.

“These are performers who have participated at the Grind Café and Limelight Music Academy,” said Chuck Leclair, entertainment coordinator.

The entertainment continues into the evening with singer/songwriter, solo duo and trio acts, including, Keegan Larose at 1pm; Chris Benton at 2pm; Stephanie Coleman at 3pm; Ryan O’Neil and Amanda Leger at 4pm; Roxanne Delage and Marc Carriere at 5pm; Tracy Lalonde at 6pm; and The Normans (Jamie Heath and Chuck Leclair) at 7pm.

On Sunday, beginning at 10 am, Candy Provost and Tammy McCrae, will lead a mass audience singing of Hallelujah and Amazing Grace, followed by Peter John Fortin, at 11am and children’s performer and story teller Pat Jamieson. An all-ages acoustic open mic showcase will be held from 1pm to 4pm, featuring six local church choirs performing their favourite spirituals.
