Local history will come alive this summer through a series of new activities and exhibits at the Cornwall Community Museum in Lamoureux Park.

Curator Ian Bowering has been joined at the Museum by new program coordinator Penny Bateman, and they have wasted little time in organizing an extensive calendar of events for the coming months.

“The Cornwall Community Museum is a great venue to learn about our past, and we want people of all ages to stop in for a visit and take a trip back in time,” said Mr. Bowering.

During the months of June, July and August, the Museum will be offering free family activities on Sundays between 2 pm and 4 pm.  The weekly events will feature old-fashioned fun with scavenger hunts and games followed by a unique craft session. Young participants can learn how to make a pinwheel and a boomerang, among other things.

The Museum will also be running a River Rats Summer Camp for children ages 6 to 12 from Monday, July 30th to Friday, August 3rd. There will be a choice of morning or afternoon sessions to choose from and spaces are limited, so residents are encouraged to book early by contacting the Museum at (613) 936-0280.

For a little more summer fun, the Museum will holding the “Thing Contest” to coincide with Kinsmen Cornwall Lift-Off. Residents are encouraged to bring their favourite “thing” to the museum from Thursday, July 12th to Saturday, July 14th and enter it in one of five categories - the Cornwall Thing, the Oldest Thing, the Oddest Thing, the Newest Thing or the Cutest Thing. Judging will take place on Sunday, July 15th at 2 pm and the winners will be selected.

In addition, the Museum will be open on Canada Day and it will once again be participating in Open Doors in September.

A Riverboats exhibit is currently on display until mid-June, and upcoming exhibits will feature Cornwall’s Historic Theatres and the War of 1812.

The Museum will also be bringing an old tradition back to life with afternoon teas with refreshments on select Friday afternoons during the summer beginning June 29th. Also, residents over 50 are invited to drop in for a cup of tea and chat every Thursday at 3 pm. For more information on dates or to  book a group visit, please call the Museum.

“It’s great to see so much activity taking place at our community Museum,” said Acting Mayor Glen Grant. “Together with the Museum and the nearby splashpad, play area and recreational path, there’s a lot of free activities in Lamoureux Park to keep families busy this summer.”

In addition to these special events, the Museum is open every week from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 am to 4 pm, between June and August and 11 am to 4 pm from September to December 15.

Residents are welcome to stop in for free tours, and members of the S,D&G Genealogical Society are on hand Wednesdays from 1 pm to 4 pm for those who wish to explore their personal past through the Museum’s extensive archive collection.
