City department receives funding for emergency materials

The City of Cornwall's Social Services Department has received a grant of $688.48 from the Joint Emergency Preparedness Program (JEPP) to cover a portion of the cost for vests and signage for emergency reception centres.

“The vests will help identify volunteers and workers. The signs are clearly marked so people will be more comfortable knowing where they are going,” said Operations and Training Coordinator, Lynn Tyo.

The Social Services Department is mandated by the Emergency Management and Civil Protection act of 1990 to provide emergency shelter, food and clothing. In 2012, the department received funding for a new laptop that will allow them to keep records and information accessible.

“Unfortunately, this will be the last amount of funding the Social Services Department will receive from JEPP. There are no more funds available across Canada,” said Tyo.

The Benson Centre is currently the emergency reception centre. Mock training is done annually and a full mock emergency is put through the test once every five years.

The grant amount reflects forty five percent of the cost. The Social Services Department pays for the remaining fifty five percent.

The green vests are to indentify the leaders and the blue vests identify the remaining volunteers and workers.
