Meals on Wheels seeking volunteers to deliver hot meals to residents

Meals On Wheels

Meals on Wheels has been delivering hot nutritious meals to homebound residents of Cornwall since 1970. In that year, the first deliveries were made to 6 people in the City. Today, the program serves 130 clients each day, with more on a waiting list.

The growth in the program has created a growing need for volunteers to maintain this important service.

“We rely solely on volunteers of the program to deliver the meals. There are 240 volunteers, and yet more are still needed. They are not always available due to various reasons,” said Andrée-Anne Morin, Meals on Wheels Volunteer Coordinator.

“Not only is the program for the delivery of meals, but it is also a safety check for the elderly living alone. It gives a sense of security to the family knowing someone will be there each day.”

There are seven daily routes within the City that are handled by 14 volunteers (working in pairs), and each route takes approximately two hours or less to complete. The volunteers deliver the meals between the hours of 11 am to 1 pm.

“Some volunteers deliver as little as once a month or as often as they wish,” said Mrs. Morin. “As Cornwall’s population ages, the demand for community support will continue to increase. A service such as Meals on Wheels can make a difference in the lives of many."

Meals on Wheels is based in the Glen Stor Dun Lodge and it is funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the United Way of S, D & G. The main purpose of the program is to provide home-delivered, hot, nutritious, low-cost meals ($25.85 per week) to those who are unable to prepare meals for themselves, for different reasons. Meals are prepared fresh daily by the dietary staff at the Lodge.

“This program helps clients stay in their own homes longer and will prevent premature admission to long term care facilities,” said Mrs. Morin.

Residents who are interested in volunteering can contact Mrs. Morin by email at amorin@cornwall.ca or by phone at 613-933-3384 ext.263.
