Science and Nature Speaker Series

On Wednesday, March 28th, the Science and Nature Speaker Series at the Cornwall Public Library welcomes Karen Paquette, Species at Risk Technician with South Nation Conservation, as she speaks about turtles and their habitat.

Turtles are good indicators of a healthy and ecologically stable watershed.  Currently, 7 out of the 8 species of turtles native to Ontario are listed as Species at Risk, and the average survival rate of eggs laid by native turtles is 1% or less.

Karen will explain how many times a turtle has to cross a road safely before having the ability to reproduce, not an easy feat considering that it takes anywhere from 15 to 25 years for Ontario turtles to reach sexual maturity and lay the first clutch, and that  road mortality is a leading cause of turtle decline across the province.

Through her work with South Nation Conservation, Karen has designed and built habitat enhancements such as artificial turtle nesting platforms, and she has extensive experience trapping, handling, and marking Species at Risk turtles including Spotted, Eastern Musk, Blanding’s, Eastern Spiny Softshell, Northern Map, and Snapping turtles.

Attendees will have the opportunity to check out items from her work such as turtle shells, turtle egg shells, turtle skulls, and gear used in the field for data collection.

Please join Karen Paquette at the Cornwall Public Library on Wednesday, March 28 at 7 p.m.  Admission is free, however space is limited.  Please call the River Institute to reserve your seat (613) 936-6620.

The Science and Nature Speaker Series is hosted by the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences and the Cornwall Public Library, and funded entirely by sponsorships and community donations.
