In 2012, Cornwall Public Library continued to expand its role in enriching the lives of community members, with more people than ever visiting the library, in person or through the web, and accessing the library's services to record-breaking levels.

For the first time, the library achieved over 1 million total annual uses of library services in 2012. This represents a 24 per cent increase over the previous year.

“This milestone of 1 million total uses could not have been achieved without the dedicated efforts of library staff and volunteers who helped connect the library with the community and cultivate our many partnerships,” said Dawn Kiddell, Chief Librarian and CEO.

Some of the areas that experienced the highest levels of growth include:

Program Attendance - Young and old came to the library for free programs to help them read, learn and grow.

Children’s Literacy - Children read more books over the summer as part of the Read to Ride summer reading program. The Baby Tales program also grew giving more of Cornwall’s youngest citizens the opportunity to experience the sights and sounds of reading and storytelling with their parents.

Digital Literacy - Staff helped more residents become digitally literate in emerging technologies such as downloading eBooks and navigating online job applications. The library also launched a new web site which averaged over 28,000 visits per month to reserve or renew library items, discover library programs, download eBooks, or access the research databases.

Lifelong Learning - Wireless internet use soared by 90% as students of all ages used the library to connect and study. The number of distance education exams taken at the library also tripled.

Membership - Memberships increased as the library welcomed new residents and previous members rejoined to discover new library services and programs.

Borrowing - The overall number of items borrowed in 2012 increased from the previous year. Print materials were the most borrowed showing that reading is still the cornerstone of the library.

The increase in use of services is just one of the many highlights contained in the Cornwall Public Library's 2012 Annual Report. You can read the report in its entirety by clicking here.
