Red Ribbon Success for Local Citizens

Over a dozen military organizations across Canada, including the Canadian Hospital Comforts Fund, are receiving a helping hand from local citizens Eleanor Bookman and Brian Goodfellow. The two retired friends have dedicated their time to building the ‘Canadian Red Ribbon Forces’ - a campaign to support the efforts of Canadian Forces members around the world.

The initiative started when Ms. Bookman approached Mr. Goodfellow looking to keep busy. They soon heard of the Cornwall Kinette Club’s program called Chosen Soldier, created by local Kinette members Susan Carron and Jean Morgan. The Chosen Soldier program sent care packages to soldiers in Afghanistan.

Ms. Bookman and Mr. Goodfellow thought that the sale of car magnets with a "Support Our Troops" message was a good way to raise funds for the program. The two friends designed a red and white ribbon to represent Canadian pride, ordered an initial supply of car magnets, and got to work selling them. Within a few months, their efforts raised over $7,000, far exceeding the original expectations of the Kinette Club.

The Canadian Red Ribbon Forces campaign has raised over $32,000 since its inception, supporting over a dozen different charitable organizations, including the Canadian Forces Hospital Comforts Fund, Soldier On Fund, Petawawa Military Family Resources Centre, Trenton MFRC, S.D. & G. Highlanders and many more.

Cornwall City Council has shown support for the campaign with the purchase of magnets and stickers for municipally owned vehicles.

"The Canadian Red Ribbon Forces campaign has touched the hearts of Canadians, as the efforts of our brave men and women who serve for us in the Canadian Forces deserve our support," said Mayor Bob Kilger. "I am pleased that the idea came from two local residents, and wish them continued success in this very worthy cause".

Eleanor Bookman and Brian Goodfellow continue to dream up new ways to further the goals of the Canadian Red Ribbon Forces campaign. The couple are has ideas on how to get their message to different areas and are looking at yet again expanding their line-up of products.
